CORTEZ SKATEPARK TEMPORARY CLOSURE FOR REPAIRS – AUGUST 11 – AUGUST 29

CORTEZ, CO - The City of Cortez Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce recent progress with the long-planned repairs to the Cortez Skatepark. The skatepark is located in the southeast corner of Parque de Vida, at Montezuma Avenue and Roger Smith Avenue. It has been the subject of community interest recently due to years of deferred maintenance. Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Jenny Bandi stated, “the skatepark has a dedicated group of users that are passionate about maintaining this free space for generations to come. I quickly learned that there was much that needed to be done to rehab this space into a safe and usable area. This project is long overdue.”

After a concerted effort from multiple departments, the City recently secured a contract with Sychar LLC to perform concrete repairs with a projected start date of August 11, 2025. This project is estimated to take two to three weeks and will include the repair and resurfacing of damaged areas, building a retaining wall to reduce levels of debris and dirt in the park, adding a low rail spanning 18 to 8 inches in height, and removing a concrete block to improve skate flow and improve maintenance

These repairs are part of a coordinated effort throughout Cortez parks to increase safe spaces for youth and families. “Having free safe spaces for youth and families to enjoy are critical for the vibrancy of our park system and our community. Updating the skatepark is the first task, maintaining a presence from the new Park Ranger Program and developing strong community partnerships are other priorities,” Bandi shared. The skatepark will be a part of the Cortez Park Rangers’ patrol route and will be maintained by a collaboration between the Parks and Recreation staff and community partnerships.

The Parks and Recreation Department asks that the public please respect the boundary set around the skatepark during repairs to aid in a successful repair.

The skatepark project is one of many deferred maintenance projects the City is conducting to maintain functionality of its park infrastructure. Other similar projects include replacing electrical infrastructure at the South Softball Complex, improving turf grass fields at the South Neighborhood Park, replacing slides and other playground equipment at several parks, adding a pitched roof to the Outdoor Pool Mechanical Building, and removing old, dilapidated restrooms at Montezuma and Veterans Parks.
