The City of Cortez is preparing for the upcoming Municipal Election on April 7, 2026, and we’re inviting community members to step forward as city council candidates. Nomination packets will be available January 6, 2026.
The City of Cortez Regular Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. The election will be conducted via mail ballot, and there will be four (4) Councilmember positions on the ballot. There shall be elected three council members for terms of four years each and one council member for a term of two years.
Pursuant to CRS § 31-10-302(2), nomination petitions for the office of Councilmember will be available from the City Clerk’s Office beginning Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. Petitions must be filed with the City Clerk’s Office no later than Monday, January 26, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.
Candidate Eligibility:
Must be a citizen of the United States
At least 21 years of age on Election Day
Must have resided within the limits of the City of Cortez for 12 consecutive months preceding the election
Each candidate needs 25 valid signatures on their petition and can only get signatures between Jan. 6 - Jan. 26 at 5 pm.
- The City will hold an informational open house for anyone who may be interested in running for City Council. We will talk about the role of Councilmembers and the necessary commitment for the position, as well as answer any questions. All interested parties can begin circulating their nomination petitions January 6, 2026. Petitions must be turned into the City Clerk by Monday, January 26, 2026 by 5 p.m.
