Fireworks display ended in a united decision for overall safety of the community.
We regret the abrupt cancellation of last night's 4th of July fireworks display. The decision was a unified response by the Cortez Police Department and the Cortez Fire Protection District for the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors.
Last night, an individual fired gunshots into the air at Parque De Vida during the fireworks display. Thankfully, no one was injured but it was a frightening experience for the community.
We understand the excitement and anticipation surrounding the fireworks display, and share your disappointment. However, decisions were made in the interest of public safety.
The incident is under investigation by the Cortez Police Department.
