Sidewalks
Sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner to clean and maintain.
Sidewalk Cost-Share Program
The City of Cortez provides an annual sidewalk cost-share program to help residents and business owners either install new sidewalk or replace deteriorated sidewalks on their property. The program encourages and promotes improvement of our public walkways by offering a 50% cost-share agreement with local residents. In addition, the City utilizes this project for maintenance on City sidewalks, ADA accessible ramps, and miscellaneous curb and gutter work.
Applications are accepted until April 15th each year for participation in that year's Sidewalk Cost-Share Program. Application forms are available at the City Service Center in the Industrial Park, or can be printed. For more information, contact the Public Works Department in the City Service Center at 970-565-7320.
Sidewalk Snow Removal
In 2008, Ordinance No. 1109 was passed where downtown business owners are to clean their sidewalks after a storm. Sidewalks shall be cleaned by noon of the second day following the last measurable snowfall. The areas this affects are: Main Street (Hwy 160), from Maple Street east to Highway 145; North and South Broadway; and businesses on the side streets in the downtown area from Maple Street to Harrison Street, between North Street and First Street.
The property owner is responsible for removing the snow from the sidewalks, whether the lot has a business on it, or is vacant. Snow removal on the sidewalks is done to give safe passage to pedestrians.
